Ultrasound (also called sonography) imaging of the abdomen uses sound waves to produce pictures of the structures within the abdomen. It is used to help diagnose pain and evaluate the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, and other intra-abdominal organs. Abdominal ultrasound imaging is frequently a first-line test that helps your doctor diagnose and treat gastrointestinal and other abdominal medical conditions.
A Doppler ultrasound study may be part of an abdominal ultrasound examination. It is a special ultrasound technique that evaluates blood flow through arteries and veins in the abdomen.
Ultrasound is safe, painless, noninvasive and does not use radiation.
Ultrasound requires little special preparation. You should refrain from eating or drinking for at least 6 hours before the test.
