Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule endoscopy allows examination of the small intestine, which is hard to see with upper endoscopy or colonoscopy. It is used to evaluate unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain, and to diagnose such conditions as Crohn’s and celiac disease.

The patient swallows a small single-use capsule that contains a microscopic camera. It travels inside the intestine and transmits video images wirelessly to a recording device. The capsule will pass spontaneously with a bowel movement. The test is painless and requires only minimal preparation.
